Looking to Eat Around USC? Look No Further.
I have been living in the greater USC area for the past two years now, and as a self-proclaimed foodie, I am always trying to find the best restaurants around USC. Unfortunately, anyone who has explored around knows that our choices around campus are limited. The majority of our options are fast food chains or overpriced restaurants, but there are some gems that I would like to shine some light on. Here’s my personal food guide for the USC area (in no particular order):
1. Fig’s Corner
A newcomer to the USC area, this recently opened restaurant offers single-served hotpots and skewers that feels like a welcoming taste of home to me. While their menu is mostly limited to hotpots and skewers, they do also have an array of appetizers and “Eat with Beer Snacks” (as their menu says). Personally, my favorite is their hotpots as they’re flavorful and stuffed with various ingredients that’s sure to fill you up.
2. Spudnuts Donuts
If you’re from USC and you haven’t had at least one late night Spudnuts’ run in your college life, you’re missing out. Spudnuts is a 24-hour donut shop located in the same plaza as Pot-of-Cha and Yoshinoya. In addition to donuts, they also sell sandwiches and have an extensive drinks menu. Their price is reasonable and honestly feels like a steal compared to other sweet options nearby. My personal recommendation (outside of donuts) is their smoothies as they hit the spot every time with their refreshing taste.
3. Thai by Trio
It surprises me to find out that not that many people go to Thai by Trio. While it’s a bit further down Figueroa, they are one of the best Asian restaurants nearby. They are primarily Thai-focused, but also have some other Asian cuisines sprinkled in their menu too. Their noodle dishes have never failed me (actually I lied, their garlic noodles is a no-go) and overall, they’re as authentic as you can get within the Shryft radius.
4. Qin West Noodles
We’re getting a bit far from USC now, but Qin West was a pleasant surprise to me. Located close to the Lorenzo, Qin West is a Chinese noodle house that serves (of course) noodle dishes, dumplings, and rice dishes. Their shop is small and quaint and is a perfect spot for a solo dinner. It’s also less well-known so wait times are relatively non-existent.
5. Jacks N Joe
Last but not least, Jacks N Joe. This breakfast spot hits perfectly in the morning after a late night of fun. This is the only spot within the area that offers your traditional American breakfast foods of “flapjacks”, omelettes, and other similarly-related items. They do close a bit early (1:30 or 2:30 PM depending on the day) so it’s definitely more of a breakfast than a brunch place.
These are just some of plenty of food spots around USC, but they are definitely my favorites by far. I will say that my list is primarily focused around S. Figueroa as I mainly dine around that side of campus, so I would love to hear what your favorites are, especially ones I haven’t been to yet!
Queenie, you have great recommendations! I have recently been stuck in a Thai by Trio phase. They have such an extensive menu with great ambiance inside as well. I've not tried their noodle dishes yet, but I'll be sure to order one next time I'm there. I have yet to try Jacks N Joe but I've been wanting to for a while! Another spot my friends and I enjoy is Ebaes. They mainly have ramen and sushi but it is another restaurant with a fun atmosphere inside.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great list, however I'm disappointed that Spudnuts is not number one. Personally, I think Spudnuts is an institution their breakfast sandwiches are amazing so simple yet always delicious. Additionally their hot sauce is amazing and unlike any other hot sauce I've tried. Spudnuts for me is the best way to start the day.
ReplyDeleteI love Thai By Trio's Pad See Ew so much, my friends and I are religiously there to get that meal and somehow, I never get sick of it! I really need to try Jack and Joes because I have never heard of it and I LOVE breakfast food so I must check it out. I love learning about new food spots near USC!
ReplyDeleteThis was very informational. I am always looking for good new places to try around USC and this post is exactly what I was looking for. I also have to recommend Hotbox. They have great food at low prices. Perfect for a lunch or quick dinner date.
ReplyDeleteThai by Trio is my go to! Their butter chicken is to die for. I feel like im always down for Thai but I might have to stop by the last 2 spots on your list. Qin West Noodles sounds really good, i have yet to find good dumplings around here.
